The Noble Rock Orchid varieties produce vibrant and multicolored blooms that captivate the eye with their diversity. The flowers can vary in shades of pink, lavender, white, and even deep purple, often with contrasting markings and patterns on the petals and sepals. The lip, or labellum, is particularly ornate, often adorned with intricate patterns, fringed edges, and a contrasting color that serves as a focal point. These blooms typically appear in clusters, creating a stunning display of color and fragrance.

Speaking of fragrance, many varieties of Noble Rock Orchids are known for their delightful scent, which can range from sweet and floral to spicy and exotic, depending on the specific hybridization and growing conditions. This makes them not only a visual delight but also a sensory treat for those who appreciate fragrant orchids.

The Noble Rock Orchid, scientifically known as Dendrobium nobile, is a revered and timeless orchid species cherished for its exquisite, elegant, and cascading displays of colorful blooms. Native to the Himalayan regions of India, Nepal, and Southeast Asia, this orchid has a long and storied history dating back centuries, earning it a place of honor in the world of orchid cultivation.

One of the defining features of the Noble Rock Orchid is its arching growth habit. The plant’s graceful, cane-like stems can reach impressive lengths, often exceeding 3 feet (1 meter), and adorned with a profusion of narrow, lance-shaped leaves. During the blooming season, these stems become a spectacle of color and beauty as they drape down gracefully under the weight of numerous flowers.

Cultivating the Noble Rock Orchid requires attention to its specific care requirements. They thrive in bright, indirect light, replicating their natural habitat where they cling to rocks and trees. Adequate humidity, consistent moisture, and well-draining orchid media are essential for their well-being.

Noble Rock Orchids come with a rich cultural significance in many Asian countries and cultivated for centuries, often as symbols of love, beauty, and nobility. These orchids continue to captivate orchid enthusiasts and collectors worldwide, gracing homes, gardens, and orchid shows with their cascading beauty and timeless elegance. Whether grown as individual specimens or incorporated into orchid arrangements, the Noble Rock Orchid remains a beloved and cherished member of the orchid family, a testament to the enduring allure of these exquisite plants.

How The Fun Of Building A Geodesic Dome Began

Building a geodesic dome journey. After living in the smack-middle of NYC for 25 years (loved every minute), we decided to close up shops and move to Hawaii. And so we did; on August 4, 2014, we moved to the Big Island of Hawaii. Five years prior, we purchased a one-acre lot in one of the prettiest subdivisions called Leilani Estates.

Goodbye NYC – Aloha Hawaii!

We have extensively researched the perfect place for us to retire eventually. Although far from retirement age, we want to play and enjoy all the fun things we love before retiring. One thing was sure: we would like to live on an island near the ocean where we could snorkel, scuba dive, and play in the water whenever we wanted. All year round, sunshine is a must, and it has to be part of the United States.

We traveled all over the world, but somehow, we found ourselves to keep returning to Hawaii. We read tons of books and posts and reviews on the Big Island. One book was “Affordable Paradise,” which was particularly on target in the area we were interested in.

Long story short, we wanted to find out if we would like to live in the jungle in the rainforest, with all the bugs, frogs, and other creatures crawling around.

We booked an entire house for ten days in Leilani Estates; oh boy! We were hooked from the first moment we arrived. Walked and biked all over town, zigzagging the streets. We were looking to buy a house on the spot.

Rented a Pretty House in Lelani Estates

Talked to several realtors, and they were kind enough to show us a few homes on the market for sale. Gave us some pointers on what to look for when buying a home in the jungle. We learned a lot and were very grateful. This trip is worth every penny. We did a good thing.

Zigzagging The Streets in Leilani Estates

We learned from the realtors that, no matter what you buy, you must fix it, make it your own, and probably will spend more than anticipated. It is easier and relatively cost-effective to build one from scratch, from the ground up. Oh, geez, really?! Less than a year later, we purchased a lot on Nohea Street in the lovely Leilani Estates.

Who Says a House Has to be Square?

We always had this crazy notion of building anything but square. So, the search for something different just began.

One day, I was in a yellow cab going uptown on York Avenue and 67th street when I shouted at the poor driver to stop the car, he almost had a heart attack; I needed to get out.

I spotted a glass dome structure behind the trees. Turns out; it is a Caspary Auditorium part of Rockefeller University. I don’t care; that’s what I want!

I know, it sounds incredibly obnoxious and I am, really not a demanding, high-maintenance woman, but this could be something magical and would love to see what’s out there resembling this shape that can be turn into a home.

I also remembered that the Hayden Planetarium and the New York Botanical Garden are dome structures. They became our weekend projects, and we visited them many-many occasions.

At this point it was clear that we want to live in a geodesic dome home. Not sure how we are going to pull this off, but we just have to try it.

While searching for geodesic dome kits and plans, we came across Natural Spaces Domes in Minnesota. They have a three-day DOME TOUR and a DOME SCHOOL that we signed up for immediately. You get to see other people’s domes inside and out, and they will answer all your questions. Plus, you can learn to build your future dome in the school. It was fantastic!

We arrived on the island on August 4th, and a few days later, Hurricane Iselle swept through the islands, knocking down power lines, uprooting ginormous Albizia trees, and turning the island upside down. On the positive side, it helped us by clearing some of the large trees on our lot.

By the middle of May 2015, we had a concrete foundation in place and waited for the dome to arrive from Minnesota. Our dome stood tall and passed final inspections on June 29, 2016. Since our builders overbooked themselves with other projects, it took us longer to raise the dome than anticipated. However, in the end, it was worth it and looked beautiful!

We Are Building A Geodesic Dome…Again

Long story short, we decided to stay on the island and give it another try. We quickly purchased a new lot (far away from the hotspots), fearing that we wouldn’t find any within our budget if we waited too long. We truly loved our new dome, and since we never had a chance to enjoy it, after several days of discussion, we decided to give it another try. This time, we can make adjustments that we missed or were not fond of for the first time. We feel fortunate to get a second chance. (No worries! We insured the dome to the maximum and were paid in full quickly.) Running a business in NYC, you quickly learn to insure just about everything.

In this blog, we share our experiences of building a geodesic dome, losing it to a volcanic eruption, and rebuilding it for the second time. Talking about all the fun and the nightmares of the construction. Hope you will enjoy it and be helpful if you decide to build one.

We passed framing inspection and as soon as the inspector left, started installing the T&G triangle panels inside. It took the two of us a little over two weeks to put them up. Even though this was our second dome, we never installed these triangles before, the builders did.

The best part about these panels is that they come precut, numbered, and color-coded, as you can see. We followed the diagram and matched the numbers and colors to the 2×8 framings. You can say it’s almost dummy-proof.

Some of the panels are taller than me, they are pretty heavy and clumsy. Therefore, we ended up taking the larger ones a part, so we can lift them up to the scaffolding much easier.

We choose the 1′′ x 8′′ tongue & groove, kiln dried, premium selected, Engleman Spruce wood finish for the interior triangles. We love the look and the low maintenance part; they’re easier and faster to install, even for DIYers like us, and they are much less expensive than the sheetrock panels.

Also, spruce is a very light wood and will not turn yellow and get very dark with age as pine would. So that’s a plus.

Some dome owners use a “low or no VOC” water-based wood sealer that will darken the wood panels somewhat. We decided not to put any sealer or stain on our panels. They are non-toxic and really maintenance-free.

You can visit several domes and see for yourself the type of panels you’d like. There are several dome owners used white plywood panels or sheetrock boards for interior triangles. We didn’t care for those designs.

Otherwise, it would create a very weak wall structure.

With its stunning landscapes and tropical climate, Hawaii is a dream destination for many who seek to build their own paradise. The process of land clearing has an entirely different meaning in Hawaii. Why? Soil is created from basaltic lava, volcanic ashes, limestones from corals, and material deposits from water runoffs. There are some important steps to prepare your property for construction while respecting the island’s unique ecosystem and regulations.

Our first, one-acre property in Leilani Estates is covered by lava rocks or, as the locals call it, “blue rocks.” Where the 1955 volcanic eruption happened and left an unmistakable footprint. (On May 3rd, 2018, the same volcanic eruption returned and claimed our newly built home.)

However, when we moved to the Big Island on August 4th, 2014, by August 7th, hurricane Iselle stormed through the islands and left behind a sizable devastation. In our case, it helped with the land clearing and saved us some money. LOL! She turned our property upside-down by knocking down and uprooting ginormous albizia trees. When it came to land clearing, all the D9 bulldozer had to do was push the broken trees to the sides. Well…almost.

The D9 had to remove trees, stumps, and rocks, rip up the lava rocks, and grade the lot. Also, we brought in (not sure how many) truckloads of cinder to cover the entire one-acre and 2 inches of drain rocks for the driveway and around the dome and garage for better drainage.

It’s Worth It To Hire Professionals for Land Clearing

After we lost our newly built home to the 2018 volcanic eruption, we decided to stay on the Island and give it another try. We’ve purchased a three-acre property in Waiakea Uka, Hilo, and started the rebuilding process with land clearing.

This time, we hired Excavation Tech LLC to prepare the lot for the dome and carport. But Paul, the owner, did so much more than that. Since we have over 200 inches of rain fall each year, some of our neighbors were concerned about moving the dirt around and warned us about the possible flooding problems. Paul completely redesigned the property, rerouted the water into the deep creek we have in the back, and solved the flooding issues for the neighbors, too. Now we have happy neighbors.

The best way to describe the end results is that he carved out the Grand Canyon, rerouted the Colorado River on the left-side side of the property, and built Machu Picchu for the dome pad about an extra 13-15 feet high. Boy, with all the rain we had since, we are truly grateful!

Consider These Before Start Land Clearing on Your Own

Before you look into land clearing, you’ll need to take a few steps. Walk through the area and become familiar with what you want to clear away. Are there any significant obstacles, like steep hills, lava tubes that are common in Hawaii, giant trees, or boulders?

Also, it would be best to learn more about building and zoning permits, depending on your area and what you intend to use the land for. The land is protected for environmental reasons, or it may not be eligible to build anything on it. Professional land clearing companies can assist you in the permit process. But it would be best if you did your research first, perhaps even before purchasing the land.

Clearing land involves removing trees, vegetation, and other obstacles; you’ll need more than just a chainsaw. While it might be tempting to attempt land clearing on your own to save money, there are several compelling reasons why you shouldn’t do it without professional help:

Safety Concerns: Land clearing can be hazardous. It involves the use of heavy machinery, chainsaws, and other potentially dangerous tools. Professionals are trained to handle these tools safely, minimizing the risk of accidents. Without proper training, you could injure yourself or others.

Knowledge and Expertise: Professionals have the knowledge and expertise to assess the land and identify potential hazards such as unstable trees, underground utilities, and wildlife habitats. They can plan the clearing process effectively, ensuring that it’s done efficiently and safely.

Environmental Regulations: Land clearing is often subject to local environmental regulations. Professionals are familiar with these regulations and can obtain the necessary permits. Attempting land clearing without proper permits can result in legal issues and fines.

Preservation of Ecosystems: Professionals can assess the land to preserve valuable ecosystems, such as wetlands or habitats for endangered species. Clearing land without this knowledge can harm local biodiversity and ecosystems.

Proper Equipment: Land clearing often requires heavy machinery that most individuals don’t have access to. Professionals have the right equipment for the job, which allows for efficient and safe clearing. Using improper equipment can lead to damage, injury, or incomplete clearing.

Debris Disposal: Clearing land generates a significant amount of debris. Professionals have processes in place for proper disposal, recycling, or repurposing of the debris. Handling this aspect on your own can be overwhelming and time-consuming.

Soil Considerations: Professionals can assess the soil quality and composition. They can advise on proper erosion control measures and soil conservation techniques. Incorrect land clearing can lead to soil erosion and degradation.

Cost-Effectiveness: While it might seem like a cost-saving measure to clear land on your own, the risks of damage, potential fines, and the time and effort involved often make professional services more cost-effective in the long run.

Time and Effort: Land clearing is a labor-intensive and time-consuming process, especially for large areas. Professionals can complete the job more quickly and efficiently, allowing you to focus your time and energy on other aspects of your project.

Quality of Work: Professionals can ensure a high-quality, well-executed clearing job. Their experience and expertise result in a professionally cleared land, providing a solid foundation for any future construction or landscaping projects.

In summary, land clearing is a complex and potentially dangerous task that requires knowledge, experience, and the right equipment. Hiring professionals ensures the job is done safely, legally, and efficiently, saving you time, effort, and potential headaches.

YES, WE DID ALL THAT

Understanding Local Regulations

Before you begin clearing your property, it’s vital to research and understand the local regulations and permits required for construction in Hawaii. The state’s environmental and zoning laws can be stringent, and failing to comply with them can lead to delays, fines, or even the cessation of your construction project.

1. Consult with Local Authorities: Start by reaching out to the local planning department or county offices to obtain information on zoning laws and building permits specific to your property. They can provide guidance on what’s allowed and what restrictions might apply.

2. Environmental Impact Assessment: Depending on the location and size of your property, you may need to conduct an environmental impact assessment. This is especially important in Hawaii, where the environment is fragile and protected. The assessment will determine any potential impacts your construction may have on the local ecosystem.

3. Building Permits: Once you’ve obtained the necessary information and conducted any required assessments, apply for the appropriate building permits. This process may involve submitting site plans, engineering designs, and other documentation, so be prepared to provide all the necessary paperwork.

Respecting Hawaii’s Unique Ecosystem

Hawaii is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, much of which is found nowhere else in the world. It’s essential to respect and protect this unique ecosystem when clearing your property for geodesic dome construction. Here are some eco-friendly practices to consider:

1. Hire a Local Ecologist: Before clearing any land, consult with a local ecologist or environmental consultant. They can help identify sensitive areas, endangered species, and other ecological concerns on your property. Their expertise will ensure that your construction project has minimal impact on the environment.

2. Selective Clearing: Instead of clear-cutting your entire property, opt for selective clearing. This means removing only the vegetation and trees necessary for your geodesic dome construction while preserving as much of the existing landscape as possible.

3. Native Plant Restoration: If you must remove native plants during the clearing process, consider implementing a native plant restoration plan. This involves replanting native species to help restore the ecosystem and maintain biodiversity.

4. Erosion Control: Hawaii’s terrain is susceptible to erosion, especially during heavy rains. Implement erosion control measures, such as installing silt fences and retaining walls, to prevent soil erosion and runoff that could harm nearby water bodies.

Site Preparation

With a focus on environmental preservation, you can now begin preparing your property for geodesic dome construction.

1. Clearing Vegetation: Work with a professional land clearing crew to remove vegetation as needed. Ensure that only necessary vegetation is removed to minimize the impact on the environment.

2. Grading and Leveling: Geodesic domes require a level foundation. Grading and leveling the site may be necessary to create a suitable base for your dome’s construction. Work with a licensed grading contractor to ensure proper site preparation.

3. Soil Testing: Conduct soil testing to determine its composition and stability. This information will help you make informed decisions about foundation design and construction.

4. Utility Connections: Ensure your property has access to essential utilities such as water, electricity, and sewage. If your property is in a remote area, you may need to plan for off-grid solutions, such as solar power and rainwater harvesting.

Conclusion: Building a geodesic dome in Hawaii can be a fulfilling endeavor, offering a unique and sustainable living space in one of the world’s most beautiful locations. However, it’s essential to approach the project with a deep respect for the island’s environment and regulations. By consulting local authorities, working with environmental experts, and taking eco-friendly measures during clearing and construction, you can create a geodesic dome that harmonizes with Hawaii’s natural beauty and contributes to its sustainability goals.

Prefabricated geodesic dome kit s are pretty impressive and very convenient. They take much less time to build, which you can do yourself since they’re coming pre-cut according to your dome design. They are super-energy efficient, environmentally green, and ridiculously affordable.

You can go nuts with the endless design possibilities, different sizes and configurations. There are many geodesic dome enthusiasts putting together multiple domes. They are not only for living purposes, but also for garages, workshops, greenhouses and so much mere. I’ve seen an all glass dome covered pool attached to the main dome that looked smashing.

So, if you are one of the skeptics about living in a geodesic dome, I highly suggest that you do a little more research. I assure you that you are missing out on something magnificent.

Roofing a geodesic dome is a tremendous challenge on its own but, to find the roofer that roofed before and willing to do it, again, and for an affordable price, is a different story.

For our first dome in Leilani Estates, we found a local roofing company claiming they had previously roofed a dome. Well, yes, the one man who actually had an experience roofing a dome had a last-minute change of heart. He left right after they installed half of the Ice and Water Shield Membrane. I’m unsure what happened, but he vanished, and I never saw him again.

Do You Have What It Takes To Roof a Geodesic Dome?

Long story short, the two other guys were brave enough to come back with no prior experience roofing a geodesic dome, roofed the entire dome from a pdf manual, with drawings, and incredible detailed explanations. Thank you Denise, from NSD, for your thoughtfulness and attention to details on every nail and sticky stuff.

These guys were very young, so sweet, worked long hours, and on the end, did a terrific job. But, I just can’t resist to tell this story. The Grace Ice and Water Shield Membrane had a very sticky back-side. You suppose to cut it to size before peeling of the protective paper. Too bad I don’t have pictures of that moment, it was quite a site to see, still cracking up about it.

So, instead of cutting the membrane to more-or-less the correct size, they rolled it out and chopped off a large piece. They peeled off the protective paper on the ground and tried to go up on the ladder with it.

Both guys managed to glue themselves to the roof, tangled up with the ladder, and rolled into the membrane looking like giant burritos. We were all laughing and rolling on the ground…well, not the two guys. It was madness!!!

Roofing Second Geodesic Dome

Second time around was much easier to do. We found and flew in Whalen and Angie from Idaho. Boy, what a difference it was! Whalen a Spiderman, Angie a Cat woman swinging on the roof from one side to another.

We learned a few new things from them along the way. One, for example that it is an extremely hard and physical work to haul up the shingles onto the top of the roof. Most roofers just won’t do it. We had no idea.

Thank goodness for Home Depot Tool-rental, we were able to rent a winch lift, (we named it little Whalen) to haul up the roofing material. Wow! That was a life-saver for all of us!

Whalen and Angie finished within 12 days, did a fantastic job, and we all had some fun doing it. Thank you guys!

DID YOU KNOW?

Using a large, stripped-down, sofa cushion will prevent you from sliding off the roof, even in a vertical position. It’s a must-have tool for any roofer! Go figure!

Tips on How to Leak Proof Your Dome

Only improperly roofed geodesic domes’ roof leak. I can’t think of a dome shape that causes leaks. It’s round, it’s slopes all around and water flows down. If you have leaks in your dome, there is a ginormous chance that it is caused by improper flashing at some of your openings in the roof.

For example: around the vent pipe, a skylight, an extension where two different roof lines meet, or a dormer. Flashing those openings on any dome is not a colossally different than flashing on a square conventional house.

However, if they leak on your dome, they will leak on the regular house too, if shingled and flashed poorly. Although, the geodesic dome is very different from a conventional flat roofs, the entire dome is a big, round, curvy roof but, it can be shingled with the same techniques as a conventional roof.

However, no matter how experience you are as a roofer, before you begin, it is important that you read the instructions printed on the shingle wrapper.

Roofing Materials Used on Both Geodesic Dome

Malarkey Legacy Asphalt shingle 36 sq.

Interlayer – GAF Deck Armor (54”x223’/roll)

Underlayment – Grace Ice & Water-shield High Temp membrane Malarkey Smart Start Shingles

Malarkey Hip & Ridge cap shingles

NSD Base drip edge for extensions – entex charcoal grey

NSD Roof drip edge for extensions – entex charcoal grey

Our Geodesic Dome is a 4 Frequency, low profile, 50′ diameter dome located in the smack middle of the rainforest with high winds and seasonal, no-nonsense hurricanes. Therefore, using the best waterproof material is a no-brainer. We spared no expense on the roofing materials. We used a much higher quality, heavyweight shingles with a 40-year warranty.

Big No-No’s When Roofing a Geodesic Dome

Rule #1 – Do not under any circumstances use a ridge cap or Boston ridge on any non-vertical joint of your dome roof. Water goes under the ridge cap and into the joint the ridge cap is trying to protect. Your roof will leak!

Rule #2 – DO NOT under any circumstances use silicone or other caulks to waterproof the edge of any shingles. DO NOT seal the edge of the shingle around the skylights with sealants.

Rule #3 – DO NOT shingle between any 2 skylights. DO NOT shingle over the flashing on the bottom of the point up triangle skylights or the side flashing on point down skylights. This will void the skylight & dome warranties.

Continue to top or to base of cupola use sheets of 30# felt cut to 8’-10’ long. When cupola is sheathed felt and/or ice & water should be rolled up face wall 6” to 8” slots should be cut for venting around base of cupola. See venting chapter.Install felt with 2-3 inch over- laps—fold at points with fold facing down, (saves cutting & eliminates joint) and will not catch water.

Roofing a Geodesic Dome with Asphalt Shingles

Whalen shingled the point-up triangles first, using the fastener type and spacing recommended by the manufacturer. He was using a hook blade on his utility knife (came with the house components) to cut the edge shingles 1/2” from the edge of the panel.

He had to be careful when cutting the shingle on the panel, as he could have easily cut into the roofing felt. He removed the thin plastic strip covering the mastic patches on the back of the seal- down shingles.

They used a blue chalk and a chalk line (not the red – it is much harder to wear off), snapped a line along the 2 edges of the point up triangles 5” from the edge. Shingled the point-down triangles next, lapping the edges 5” past the panel edge onto the adjacent point-up triangles.

Then he nailed or stapled the 5” overlap section. This way, the overlaps laid flat. When finished with the base triangles pointing up, he begin working on the next course up.

Followed the same procedures as before. When I asked him, how does he know which way to lap a particular joint, he said, just imagine which way the water will run over the dome at that point, and make the point so it sheds rather than collect water.

According to the manual, at vertical panel joints on the upper part of the dome, do not cut the shingles.

Do not apply a Boston or hip ridge cap to these joints.

Do not caulk the gap between the shingles with roofing cement.

You should shingle the two triangles that have a vertical line between them by treating them as one “diamond” panel. Run the shingles over the vertical joint line at 90° to the vertical joint.

Shingling the Dome Extensions

Cut angle on end and apply starter shingle next to dome. You can take a regular shingle & turn it 180°.

Continue on to edge of extension roof with starter row of shingles.

Attach step flashing over the starter shingle course.

Cut angle on end for first row of shingles. Make sure the length of this 1st row of shingles is at least 6” shorter than 1st starter shingle.

Apply this first row of shingles directly over starter row.

Continue with 1st row of shingles, making sure shingle joints do not line up with starter row.

Note the small cutoff pieces of shingles being used at the top of the point up triangles.

Shingling a Low Profile Geodesic Dome

We used planking/ scaffolding for the lower part of the roof. Be careful not to cut the shingles on the point-up triangles underneath. A mat knife with a roofing hook blade is used to cut the asphalt shingles.

For the 2nd row of triangles they are snapping a chalk line 5” down onto the 1st row of triangles. The upper shingles must overlap this line before being cut off.

We used ladders to shingle the middle section of the dome. After the point up and point down triangles done in the 1st row, and the point up triangles are done in the 2nd row, then the point down triangles on the 2nd row. It is important that the cut-off line is as straight as possible. We took our time and kept changing the hook blade.

After the 2nd row was completed, started on the 3rd row point up triangles. Note how the top 2 triangles of the pentagon are shingled as a diamond without a ridge cap over the vertical line.

NO ridge caps were used in the shingling of this dome. Final shingling on top of the vent cupola with cupola base flashing and fascia was applied.

Raising a geodesic dome is an exciting process that involves careful planning, precise measurements, and teamwork. Our geodesic dome structure comprises interconnected triangles, which distribute the structural stress throughout the framework. We chose a 2 x 8 Dome Pre-cut Complete Shell Kit with single pane triangle skylights since we live in Hawaii, where the weather is perfect and won’t get any snow; therefore, there is no need for a 24” wide super-wall nor the 2 – 3 pane windows.

While the construction crew was working on the foundation, our container arrived from Minnesota with all the goodies inside. The container company gave us three days to unload the shipping container, and fortunately, we found a few helpful neighbors to help us unpack the dome components. It’s a back-breaking process, and we were so grateful that they came back until the end. We feed them well and paid them for their hard work. I’ll tell you, you can’t expect anyone to work this hard for free. It’s just not fair!

Because we had no other option but to unload the container at the rental house, we still had to deliver the parts to the building site. We used my minivan for smaller pieces and rented a truck for the riser walls, skylights, and large and heavy components.

Let’s Get Technical

The heart of our geodesic dome is the Super-Lok connection hardware system that is self-aligning and simple for any “novice” dome builder to assemble. All we had to do was slip the sleeve tongue into the hub slot and pound the bolt in place, securely locking the two together. No need to tighten, no re-aligning, no adjusting. As simple as that.

Here is how the dome framework reacts to loads with the super-strong connection system: The dome framework transfers all roof loads directly to the dome’s base. These loads get added to each other on the way down. The lower part of the dome can take 6,000 – 10,000 pounds of pressure at each lower connection point. This means the weakest link in the ”chain” can handle this pressure.

Since we are on The Big Island of Hawaii with regular hurricanes and earthquakes, the Ultra-Lok connectors are up to the task of withstanding and supporting heavy winds and severe shakes during earthquakes. I can testify to these claims from experience during the 2018 volcanic eruption with thousands of tremors, a few powerful earthquakes, and several powerful methane explosions on our property.

When a 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck the south flank of Kilauea Volcano, many of our neighbors’ homes were damaged badly. Windows and glass doors were shattered, foundations were cracked, roofs collapsed, and walls fell. But our dome was standing tall without a scratch. Not a single crack on the 20-foot-tall triangle skylights nor in the foundation. Unfortunately, the dome wasn’t lava-proof. LOL!

If you ask me, a geodesic or any other domes should have as many triangle skylights as possible or as many as you can afford; otherwise, they look pathetic from the outside and can be dark and even claustrophobic inside. In total, we installed 42 windows, rooftop skylights, triangle skylights, and double sliding doors. No, it’s not an overkill.

On our three-day dome tour with Natural Spaces Domes, we had a chance to visit several domes with different designs and sizes. But my first impressions were that they needed more skylights. When I asked the owners: “Why don’t you have more skylights?” some got a little upset or defensive for criticizing their homes. But honestly, I was not. Anyhow, usually, their answers were it cost too much, or they liked their privacy.

As for the privacy issues, any window or skylight can be tinted as dark as you’d like. It blocks the “Peeping Toms” from the outside but not your view from the inside. Yes, they can be pricey, especially if you need a double or triple-pane triangle skylight that can withstand the elements.

With that in mind, during the design process, we installed twenty single-pane triangle skylights, with a cluster of six tinted darker to cut down on the sun exposure facing south. On the cluster of nine skylights in the living room, we left the bottom five as is, and the rest is slightly tinted. The three triangles in the kitchen without tinting face the neighbor’s garden (we have 3 acres). In the main bathroom downstairs, we installed a cluster of two triangles, one reaching into the shower and facing the driveway. It is my fault that those are not tinted. I completely forgot, but there is no privacy issue because of their location.

Hiring Professionals When Installing Triangle Skylights Is an Excellent Idea

Installing triangle skylights or any other oversized windows is a stressful project, but these guys with their creativity and decades of experience, made it look like it’s not a big deal at all.

While Angie and Whalan worked on the roof, Kalei showed up with his seven-member crew to install triangle skylights. It was raining again or still, hard to tell.

For the first dome, we rented a skylift from Home Depot to install triangle skylights, but because it was getting wiggly while reaching over the dome, we had to tie it down to the back of the pickup truck to prevent it from tipping over. It would have been a disaster! Basically, the pickup was sitting on the skylift.

Working on the roof of a geodesic dome is definitely much more dangerous because of its sloping and curved surface. Just look at these guys running up and down, maneuvering those heavy skylights all the way to the top.

I have to admit, I was pretty annoying during the installation, making scary sounds and hovering, worried to death for their safety.

Installing Triangle Skylights Requires Creativity & Organized Teamwork

For the second dome, Ben came up with and created a very clever platform or lift for this project. It looked a bit scary at first, but with precise coordination and teamwork, it worked out perfectly. These guys were amazing to work with on both domes; I can’t say enough good things about them, especially while installing triangle skylights.

Ben is doing his magic with his little bobcat, lifting the skylights into their places. Two guys inside the dome on scaffolding grabbing the skylights with ginormous suction cups (that came with the dome kit) to secure them to the frames and roof.

Using oversized suction cups improves stability by distributing the weight of the skylight more evenly, providing better stability during installation. This reduces the risk of accidental drops and breakage. These larger suction cups are designed to handle heavier loads. This capability is crucial in this case when installing triangle skylights, ensuring that the suction cups can support the weight effectively.

They offer a larger surface area, which means they can create a stronger vacuum seal. This enhanced grip makes it easier to lift and maneuver large windows or skylights without slipping or losing suction. Also, it allows the guys to position the suction cups more efficiently. This speeds up the installation process as it requires fewer adjustments and repositioning attempts. This ergonomic design reduces strain on the men, making it more comfortable to lift and position large windows or skylights.

Tinting The Triangle Skylights Is a Good Idea

Tinting large windows and skylights can offer a range of practical and aesthetic benefits.

Our 22-foot-tall window in the living room is made up of 9 skylights facing north. Therefore, we decided to leave the bottom five as is and tint the rest since they are higher. You can see a slight difference in this picture.

The skylights in the room that facing south have much darker tinting; you can’t see through from the outside but still get lots of light.

Advantages of Tinting Windows & Skylights

Energy Efficiency: Tinted windows can significantly reduce the heat entering a building, which helps in maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature. This can lead to reduced reliance on air conditioning, resulting in energy savings and lower utility bills.

UV Radiation Protection: Tinted windows block a significant portion of harmful UV rays from the sun. UV rays can fade furniture, flooring, and artwork over time. Tinting helps in preserving the interiors and artwork by reducing the exposure to these rays.

Glare Reduction: Tinted windows reduce glare caused by direct sunlight. This is particularly beneficial in office spaces where glare on computer screens can cause discomfort and reduce productivity. It also improves visibility for drivers in vehicles with tinted windows.

Privacy and Security: Tinted windows provide increased privacy by making it difficult for outsiders to see inside. This is especially important for spaces like bathrooms or conference rooms. Additionally, tinted windows can make it harder for burglars to see inside, enhancing security.

Comfort: By reducing heat and glare, tinted windows create a more comfortable indoor environment, making it easier for occupants to focus, relax, and enjoy the space.

Aesthetics: Window tinting can enhance the overall appearance of a building. There are various tint colors and shades available, allowing for customization based on the architectural style and personal preferences.

Reduction in Fading: Tinted windows protect curtains, carpets, and other furnishings from fading due to sunlight exposure. This preservation of interior elements can save money in the long run by delaying the need for replacements.

Regulation of Temperature: Tinting can help in maintaining a consistent temperature throughout a building, reducing hot spots near windows and creating a more balanced indoor climate.

Skylight Benefits: Tinted skylights offer all the aforementioned benefits and also provide natural light, which can enhance the aesthetic appeal of a space and positively impact occupants’ mood and well-being.

Environmental Impact: By reducing the need for excessive air conditioning, tinted windows contribute to lower energy consumption, thus reducing the overall carbon footprint of a building.

It’s important to note that the effectiveness of window tinting depends on factors such as the type of tint used, the climate of the region, and the orientation of the windows or skylights. Consulting with a professional can help in choosing the right tint for specific needs and maximizing the benefits.

Also Installed Velux Fresh Air Skylights for Ventilation

Proper waterproofing is essential to prevent leaks and water damage. Many would say that a watertight seal becomes more challenging due to the curved nature of the dome. Special attention must be given to flashing, sealants, and installation techniques to prevent water from sneaking in.

For the first dome, we installed four VSE/VCE Electric “Fresh Air” Skylights designed for curb- and deck-mounted installations. It brings in lots of natural light and can be operated and even programmed for ventilation with the touch of a button. They have a rain and wind sensor that will close the skylights when it’s raining and if there is a strong wind. I loved those features. We only installed four Velux skylights on the very top of the dome, but we missed the other rooms. You should have vent windows or skylights in every single room.

On a personal note: During the installation of the Electric Velux Skylights, the inspector freaked out about wires hanging from the ceiling and shut down the installation until he finished his research on the skylights. There was no way that I was going to wait for him (previous experiences). So I printed out all the specifications, and everything I could find on the company’s website about the Velux Electric Skylights and pretty much overwhelmed him with tons of information. A week later, he came back to give us a go. Yay!

For the second dome, we were more prepared and got even more skylights, but this time, we installed five VSS Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylights and two Manual “Fresh Air” Skylights. ( The second manual skylight was a delivery mistake; we wanted the solar-powered one for that room since the ceiling is over 20 feet tall and hard to reach. But we will change it one of these days.)

Some Common Reasons Windows Might Not Pass Inspection

Windows may fail safety inspections for various reasons. Safety inspections typically focus on ensuring that windows meet certain standards to protect occupants from hazards.

Cracked or Broken Glass: Windows with cracked or broken glass pose a significant safety risk. Broken glass can cause injuries and fails to provide proper insulation.

Improper Installation: Windows must be installed correctly to ensure they function properly and provide adequate security. If a window is not installed according to local building codes and manufacturer specifications, it may fail inspection.

Inadequate Security Features: Windows should have proper locks and security features to prevent unauthorized access. If windows lack secure locks or other necessary security measures, they might not pass inspection.

Seals and Weatherstripping: Windows should have intact seals and weatherstripping to prevent drafts and water leakage. Damaged or missing seals can lead to energy inefficiency and water damage.

Operability Issues: Windows should be easy to open and close without excessive force. If windows are stuck, jammed, or difficult to operate, they might not meet safety standards.

Egress Requirements: In residential buildings, windows used as emergency exits (egress windows) must meet specific size and accessibility requirements to allow for safe evacuation in case of fire or other emergencies. If a window does not meet these requirements, it may fail inspection.

Safety Glass Requirements: Certain locations within a building, such as doors and windows near stairs, must have safety glass to prevent severe injuries in case of breakage. If safety glass is missing where required, the window may not pass inspection.

Structural Issues: Windows that are structurally compromised due to issues like rot, decay, or damage to the window frame may not pass inspection. Structural integrity is crucial for the safety and stability of the window.

Building Code Violations: Windows must comply with local building codes and regulations. If a window design or installation violates any code requirements, it will not pass inspection.

Lack of Safety Labels or Certification: Windows, especially those in commercial buildings, may be required to have safety labels or certifications indicating that they meet specific safety standards. If these labels are missing or if the windows do not meet the required standards, they might fail inspection.

It’s important to consult local building codes and regulations to ensure that windows are installed and maintained in a way that meets safety standards and requirements specific to your area. Regular maintenance and prompt repairs are key to ensuring windows pass safety inspections.

Black bamboo, or Phyllostachys nigra is a visually striking and popular bamboo species known for its jet-black culms (stems). Here is a detailed description:

Culms (Stems): – The most distinctive feature of black bamboo is its culms, which are a deep, glossy black color. These culms are tall, slender, and cylindrical, reaching heights between 20 to 50 feet (6 to 15 meters) in the wild, depending on the species and growing conditions. The culms are typically straight, although they might have a slight curve at the top.

Leaves: – The leaves are long, lance-shaped, and dark green. They grow densely along the culms and create a lush, feathery appearance. The leaves rustle gently in the wind, creating a soothing sound.

Growth Habit: – Black bamboo is a clumping bamboo species, which means it grows in tight clumps or clusters. Unlike running bamboo species, clumping bamboo does not spread aggressively, making it more manageable in garden settings. Like all bamboo species, it grows from underground rhizomes, which are the plant’s root system. The rhizomes of black bamboo are relatively contained within the clump, making it a non-invasive option for gardeners.

Flowers and Seeds: – Bamboo typically flowers infrequently, and black bamboo is no exception. When it does flower, which can occur after several years or even decades, it produces small flowers followed by seeds. After flowering, the plant usually dies back, but new shoots emerge from the existing rhizomes to continue the growth cycle.

Habitat and Growing Conditions: – Black bamboo is native to regions in China and Taiwan. It thrives in warm, tropical to temperate climates with well-draining soil. It prefers full to partial sun and requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Once established, black bamboo is relatively drought-tolerant.

When planting black bamboo, it’s important to consider its growth potential and provide enough space for the clumps to expand without crowding other plants. Proper care, including regular pruning to remove dead or weak culms, can help maintain the plant’s health and appearance.

Choose a Suitable Location

Planting Phyllostachys nigra can be a rewarding addition to your garden, providing a touch of elegance and a natural screen. Here’s a planting guide to help you grow black bamboo successfully:

Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent waterlogged roots. Sandy loam or loamy soil types are ideal.

Provide enough space for the bamboo to grow. Remember that bamboo spreads, so plant it where it won’t encroach upon nearby structures or plants.

Black bamboo thrives in full to partial sun. Choose a spot in your garden that receives at least 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Planting The Black Bamboo

Prepare the Soil: – Prepare the planting area by loosening the soil to a depth of about 1-2 feet (30-60 cm). This encourages proper root growth. Incorporate well-rotted compost or organic matter into the soil to enhance fertility.

Planting: – Dig a hole that is twice the diameter of the bamboo root ball but of the same depth. Gently remove the bamboo from its container, taking care not to disturb the roots excessively. Place the bamboo in the center of the hole, making sure the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill the hole with soil, pressing gently to remove air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly to help the soil settle around the roots.

Watering: – Water the bamboo deeply immediately after planting. Black bamboo requires regular watering, especially during dry spells. Water deeply but less frequently, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Mulching around the base of the bamboo can help retain soil moisture and regulate temperature.

Caring For Your Black Bamboo

Fertilizing: – Fertilize the bamboo during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. Avoid over-fertilizing, as excessive nutrients can lead to weak growth.

Pruning: Prune out dead, damaged, or weak culms (stems) to encourage new growth and maintain the bamboo’s appearance. Regular thinning of older culms can also improve the plant’s overall health and appearance.

Containment: – Consider installing a bamboo barrier (rhizome barrier) around the planting area to prevent the bamboo from spreading uncontrollably. The barrier should be made of high-density polyethylene and extend at least 2 feet (60 cm) below the ground surface to contain the rhizomes.

Maintenance: – Monitor the bamboo for signs of pests or diseases and take appropriate measures if necessary. Keep an eye on the spread of the bamboo to prevent it from invading unwanted areas.

Remember that bamboo can be invasive if not properly contained, so regular maintenance and attention are essential.

What Can The Black Bamboo Used For?

Black bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) has various practical and decorative uses due to its unique appearance, strength, and flexibility. Here are some common uses:

Ornamental Planting: – Black bamboo is widely used in landscaping and gardening for its ornamental value. Its dark-colored culms contrast beautifully with green foliage and other plants. It can be planted as a standalone specimen, as a natural privacy screen, or in decorative containers. Additionally, black bamboo is used in crafts, furniture making, and various artistic pursuits due to its elegant and unique appearance.

Privacy Screen and Windbreak: – Due to its tall and dense growth, black bamboo is often used as a natural privacy screen or windbreak in gardens. Planted in rows, it can create an effective barrier between different areas of a garden or shield your property from wind and prying eyes.

Decorative Containers: – Black bamboo can be grown in large containers or pots, making it a popular choice for patio or balcony gardens. Its graceful appearance adds a touch of sophistication to outdoor spaces.

Crafts and Artistry: – Bamboo culms are widely used in crafts and artistic creations. Black bamboo’s unique color makes it especially desirable for crafting decorative items, furniture, artwork, and musical instruments.

Construction and Carpentry: – Bamboo’s strength and flexibility make it suitable for construction purposes. In some cultures, bamboo is used for building houses, bridges, fences, and scaffolding. In modern applications, bamboo can also be used in carpentry for making furniture and flooring.

Culinary Uses: – While not specific to black bamboo, some bamboo shoots (young bamboo culms) are edible and are used in various Asian cuisines. However, not all bamboo species produce edible shoots, so it’s essential to ensure the bamboo variety you have is suitable for culinary purposes.

Erosion Control: – Bamboo’s extensive root system helps prevent soil erosion, making it useful for stabilizing slopes and riverbanks.

Bamboo Products: – Bamboo fibers can be processed to create textiles, paper, and other products. While this is not specific to black bamboo, it’s a general application of bamboo in the manufacturing industry.

Before utilizing black bamboo for any specific purpose, it’s crucial to research and ensure that the particular species of bamboo you have is suitable for the intended use, especially when it comes to culinary applications or construction projects. Additionally, consider the environmental impact and sustainability of bamboo sourcing, choosing sources that are responsibly managed and eco-friendly.
